5 Smart Strategies to Tackle HR Certification Exams

Mar 27, 2025

If you're preparing for the PHR, SPHR, SHRM-CP, or SHRM-SCP exam, you already know that studying is only part of the battle. The real challenge comes when you're staring at a screen, heart pounding, trying to decide between two answer choices that both seem correct. Sound familiar?

The good news? There are strategies you can use to boost your confidence, stay focused, and make smart choices under pressure. Whether you’re just beginning your study journey or counting down the days until test time, these five strategies will help you tackle the exam like a pro.

  1. Think Like an HR Leader, Not Just a Technician

One of the biggest mistakes test-takers make is thinking too narrowly. These exams don’t just assess what you know—they evaluate how you think. So, when you’re answering questions, especially scenario-based ones, think like a strategic HR leader. What would the most collaborative, business-minded version of yourself do?

Choose answers that focus on long-term solutions, strategic alignment, and influencing others. If a choice shows HR working in a silo or reacting without data, it’s probably not the best one.

  1. Don’t Get Lost in the Weeds

You might be tempted to memorize every last compliance law or benefit threshold—but that’s not what these tests are about. Instead, focus on big-picture concepts and how HR functions contribute to business success. Understand frameworks like the employee lifecycle, change management models, and the role HR plays in risk management and organizational culture.

Know a little about a lot—and be able to apply it.

  1. Use the Process of Elimination Like a Superpower

Sometimes the best way to find the right answer is by eliminating the wrong ones. Go through each choice and look for red flags like:

  • Solutions that are too reactive or punitive
  • Steps taken without input from stakeholders
  • Actions that violate HR best practices or compliance requirements

Even if you’re unsure, narrowing it down to two options increases your odds—and forces you to think critically about each one.

  1. Practice with Purpose

Practice questions are your secret weapon—but only if you use them wisely. Don’t just focus on whether you got it right or wrong. Ask yourself: Why was that the best answer? What concept did I miss? Was I overthinking it?

Also, mix up your practice: try timed quizzes, untimed reviews, and focus on areas where you feel less confident. And don’t ignore explanations—often, the rationale is more valuable than the question itself.

  1. Stay Calm and Stay Curious

Test-day nerves are real. But panicking can cloud your thinking. Your best bet is to approach the test with curiosity instead of fear. Every question is an opportunity to show how much you’ve grown as an HR professional.

When in doubt, take a deep breath, reread the question, and go back to the basics. What’s the core issue? What’s the most ethical, inclusive, and forward-thinking solution?

You’ve got this. You’ve done the work—now trust yourself.
